What’s New in Los Cabos in 2019?

More Than You Might Think…

There’s a reason Los Cabos attracts more than three million visitors each year, as well as an ever growing number of people–primarily from the U.S. and Canada–who have chosen to live in the area. Many reasons, actually; starting with year-round sunshine, gorgeous beaches, upscale lifestyle amenities, and world-class conditions for a wide array of outdoor sport and leisure activities.

But Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo have never been content to rest on their already prodigious laurels. Each year, the cape cities roll out a brand new list of luxurious amenities and one-of-a-kind experiences guaranteed to attract new visitors, and make residents happier than ever that this is the place they’ve decided to call home.

That’s certainly the case in 2019.

New Restaurants & Amenities

Whats New in Los Cabos 2019

You might think that the estimated 2,463 new hotel rooms opening this year in Los Cabos is a fact only of interest to tourists. Not true. Virtually all of Los Cabos’ luxury upscale resorts allow non-guests (residents and tourists alike) to enjoy their onsite restaurants, bars, lounges and spas. So the arrival in 2019 of benchmark hospitality brands like Nobu, Hard Rock, Four Seasons and Ritz-Carlton means Los Cabos property owners have some exceptional new options when it comes to local wining, dining and massage style pampering.

Reservations are generally required to access resort properties, but this caveat aside, that means new 2019 attractions and amenities include Four Seasons’ two miles of pristine beachfront, framed by an exclusive marina, beach club and shopping village; Hard Rock’s exquisitely designed Moon Lounge, a nightclub complete with bowling alley; Nobu’s farm-to-table dining concept, Malibu Farms; and Zadún, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve’s massive five-acre Spa Alkemia.

New Experiences & Adventures

Just as new resort properties can be enjoyed by both tourists and residents, so too can the unique experiences and adventures unveiled each year under the auspices of the Los Cabos Tourism Board.

Highlights for 2019 include an “Art to Table” experience in which participants are treated to a yacht’s-eye-view tour of the 15 bronze sculptures from famed Mexican surrealist Leonora Carrington which grace the promenade at Puerto Los Cabos–plus 50 screens representing her life and work–before an art-themed dinner at San José del Cabo’s La Revolución restaurant; and an “Amazing Tenors” adventure which includes whale watching and a hydrophone amplified concert of their incredible songs, as well as an open-air cinema experience featuring a short film about the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortés, followed by a dinner with authentic regional Mexican dishes at Los Tenangos at One&Only Palmilla.

Did we mention the three-day mountain biking and “glamping” (glamor camping) adventure?

Less strenuous, at least for spectators, is the upcoming Los Cabos Open tennis tournament. One of only two ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) sponsored events held annually in México–the Mexican Open in Acapulco is the other–this men’s invitational welcomes 28 world-class singles players and 16 doubles specialists to compete for nearly $800,000 in prize money. The 4th edition takes place July 29 to Aug. 3 at facilities just outside Cabo San Lucas.

New Championship Level Golf Courses

There are two new championship level golf courses opening this year in Los Cabos: Greg Norman’s links style Rancho San Lucas course on the Pacific Coast of Cabo San Lucas, and Robert Trent Jones Jr.’s Costa Palmas layout at La Ribera on the municipality’s breathtaking, still largely undeveloped East Cape. The latter, which is being built to accompany the new Four Seasons Los Cabos Resort at Costa Palmas, will open by the end of this year, bringing Los Cabos’ astounding and still-growing golf portfolio to a total of 18 world-class courses.

Among these 18 eighteen-hole gems are four courses ranked among the top 100 in the world by Golf Digest (Quivira, Querencia, the Dunes at Diamante, and the Ocean Course at Cabo del Sol and ), as well as acclaimed designs from legendary major champions Jack Nicklaus (Palmilla, Ocean Course at Cabo del Sol, El Dorado, Campestre, Puerto Los Cabos and Quivira); Tiger Woods (El Cardonal and The Oasis at Diamante); Greg Norman (Puerto Los Cabos and Rancho San Lucas); Fred Couples (Twin Dolphin); Davis Love III (The Dunes at Diamante); and Tom Weiskopf (The Desert Course at Cabo del Sol).

Although some local courses are open to the public, others have restrictions and may be limited to residents at nearby developments. Buying Homes via Auction Without Reserve in Los Cabos

When Opportunity Knocks – Buying Homes via Auction Without Reserve in Los Cabos

Time Sensitive material:

Month of May 2019

There are two big reasons the Los Cabos real estate market is booming right now. One reason is lifestyle related. Los Cabos is a tropical paradise, where the sun shines year-round, and a unique coastal geography–with beach, desert and mountain terrains, and the confluence of the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortés all in close proximity–promises limitless outdoor activities options. The other reason is basic economics. Not only are list prices lower for spectacular ocean view residences in Los Cabos than similarly situated properties in the U.S. and Canada, but so too are property taxes, and so too is the cost of living.

Fact is, Los Cabos offers a dream lifestyle at a financial level accessible to more than just movie stars and captains of industry.

But there is affordable luxury, and then there are just flat-out bargains, breathtakingly situated properties that are somehow available well below market value…even by Los Cabos’ already modest (compared to the U.S. and Canada) standards.

Both Homes selling separately Without Reserve in Los Cabos:

Buying Homes via Auction Without Reserve in Los Cabos

Former New York Yankees Star Jason Giambi Puts Cabo San Lucas Estate Up for Auction

The house, which is going to auction without reserve, is currently on the market for $10.7 million.

The nine-bedroom Hacienda-style residence, which opens into a bubbling Zen fountain, has exposed stone accents and a two-level freeform pool, hits the auction block from May 21 to May 24 without reserve, meaning it will sell to the highest bidder regardless of the price…  Click here for More Details of this offer

How is this possible?

How is it possible to find an absolute jewel of a property, a beachfront home or luxury villa with stunning ocean views, at a price that puts it well within reach of many of the people who vacation or live seasonally in Los Cabos? Simply put, the biggest “steals” are to be found at auction, and a very particular kind of auction at that.

An auction without reserve–also called a no-reserve or “absolute” auction–is one in which the property is sold regardless of the bidding price. There is, unless previously stipulated, no starting price or minimum bid.

A great example of what’s available in terms of auction without reserve properties in Los Cabos is the hilltop luxury villa of former New York Yankees slugger Jason Giambi, which hits the auction block from May 21st to 24th. The 9-bedroom hacienda style residence sits atop Pedregal in Cabo San Lucas, an exclusive gate community that towers high above the Land’s End city, and features commanding views of both the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortés. The Giambi residence, dubbed Casa Cielo (In English, Heaven House), currently rents out for upwards of $5,000 a night, and features amenities like multiple swimming pools, a state-of-the-art gym, and over 11,000 square feet of patio space. The estimated value of Casa Cielo is $10.7 million dollars, but again that valuation means little at a no-reserve auction, where there is no minimum bid.

This lavishly appointed villa will no doubt draw interest from a number of interested parties, but no one knows just exactly what that number might be, or how high the bids will climb. It could be that this luxurious residence is available for far, far less than its market value. It could just be the bargain of all bargains, the opportunity of a lifetime.

But there’s only one way to find out…

Blue Flag Beach Guide to Los Cabos

True Blue Shores of Golden Sand – The Blue Flag Beach Guide to Los Cabos

Blue Flag Beach Guide to Los Cabos

(Photo Credit: Medano Beach courtesy of Breathless Cabo San Lucas Resort & Spa)

Los Cabos is famed for its beautiful beaches, glorious sun-kissed swaths of golden shoreline that stretch from the Pacific Coast of Cabo San Lucas to the East Cape north of San José del Cabo. Tourists and winter snowbirds have been flocking to this tropical hundred-mile-long arc of pristine playas for more than fifty years, their sights set on beach walking, hammock swinging, margarita sipping, and spectacular up-close views of both the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortés. Many have raved about the area’s soft, fine-grained sand and majestic offshore waves, but now for the first time it can be objectively stated: Los Cabos has the best beaches in all of México.

How does one quantify such a claim? In Blue Flags, of course.

How Does a Beach Become Blue Flag Certified?

The Blue Flag program was birthed by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), a non-profit organization that began in Europe in the 1980s, but now numbers over 60 member countries around the world. In essence, it’s an eco-certification system, with prospective Blue Flag beaches required to meet and maintain strict environmental standards for things like cleanliness, water quality, safety, services and sustainability. When you visit a Blue Flag beach, for example, you’re guaranteed to find ample parking, well-kept bathrooms, ramps for handicap access, recycling bins, and a rarity in México…lifeguards.

Los Cabos now boasts 19 of Baja California Sur’s 20 Blue Flag beaches (The capital city of La Paz is home to the other, El Coromuel). It truly is an astounding number, particularly when you consider that México as a country has only 64. Los Cabos, a modestly sized municipality, now has more Blue Flag beaches than any other single state in México. Only Quintana Roo, home to Cancún and the Riviera Maya, is even close with 17.

The Growth of Blue Flag Beaches in Los Cabos

Blue Flag Beach Guide to Los Cabos

(Photo Credit: Chileno Beach courtesy of Chileno Bay Resort & Residences)

As recently as three years ago Los Cabos had only three Blue Flag beaches: Palmilla, Chileno, and Santa María. Each of these Tourist Corridor based gems sparkles with its own distinctive attractions. Palmilla’s protected offshore cove is so renowned for its serene swimming conditions, for instance, that the swim leg of the local Ironman 70.3 is held there; and the offshore bays of Chileno and Santa María are favored sites for local snorkeling tours, thanks to calm waters and a colorful abundance of marine life.

But there were far more than three beaches in the area deserving of attention, so a concerted effort was made in recent years to shine a spotlight on them. A significant percentage of the new Blue Flag certified beaches–16 more since 2016–are in effect portions of Playa El Médano, the largest and most popular beach area in Cabo San Lucas. Over two miles in length, Playa El Médano is the social center of the Land’s End city, hosting over a dozen beachfront luxury resorts, as well as boisterous beachfront cantinas like Mango Deck and The Office on the Beach. It was these Médano resorts that spearheaded the effort to have their own beach adjacent areas Blue Flag certified, and guests at these scenically situated properties (see the full list below) can now expect the same level of detail-oriented maintenance and service on the sand as they can in their exquisitely appointed suites and pampering spas.

Other local beaches, too, have been Blue Flagged in recent years. Acapulquito, a beautiful beginner-friendly surf beach near San José del Cabo, is now a member of the Blue Flag family; as is La Ribera, site of the new Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas; and Las Viudas (in English, The Widows Beach), a stretch long favored by photographers due to its strikingly shaped volcanic rock formations.

Shopping in Cabo San Lucas

Baja’s Best Browsing – Shopping in Cabo San Lucas

When one thinks of shopping in Cabo San Lucas, the immediate image is probably of a generic Mexican souvenir shop, the sort of place where vacationers stock up on sombreros or t-shirts with clever, locally-themed slogans.

Those kind of souvenir shops do still exist, particularly on the “cruise ship circuit” around the Cabo San Lucas Marina boardwalk promenade. But don’t let the touristy hustle and bustle fool you. The Los Cabos shopping scene as a whole offers much more than curios and trinkets, and indeed has grown increasingly sophisticated over the past two decades.

Nowadays, residents and visitors alike can browse in a diverse range of shops and shopping centers, the former ranging from custom clothing and swimsuit boutiques to art galleries, jewelry stores, furniture outlets, organic and specialty grocery stores, luxury boutiques boasting name brands like Chanel and Dior, and outlets of popular multipurpose U.S. chain stores like Walmart, Costco and City Club.

The Best Malls & Shopping Centers

Who doesn’t love a good mall, the kind of place where you can shop, eat, see a movie, then shop some more? Puerto Paraíso on the Cabo San Lucas Marina has long been the signature local shopping center, with all of the above attractions plus access to the adjacent Luxury Avenue, home to a host of iconic upscale purveyors of clothing and accessories.

The Shoppes at Palmilla, located just outside San José del Cabo, also draws discerning shoppers with a retail directory that includes custom furniture and décor, arts and crafts galleries, fine food, and other boutique attractions. The large mall at Patio Los Cabos, meanwhile, is a favorite of Cabo San Lucas residents, as is Plaza San Lucas, the latter home to Walmart and other popular retail stores.

The Best Arts & Crafts Galleries

The best shopping in Los Cabos may well be found in San José del Cabo’s historic Distrito del Arte, where cobblestone studded streets are framed by an eclectic variety of galleries showcasing regional artists, as well as handmade pottery and custom jewelry from artisans around México.

This charming and colorful shopping district features the best examples of sought-after commodities like Talavera and Mata Ortiz pottery, Taxco silver and Mexican fire opals, not to mention paintings, sculpture, photography, printmaking and other fine arts.

For a real treat, stop by on Thursdays between 5 and 9 p.m. during high tourist season (November through June), when a weekly Art Walk event welcomes residents and visitors to browse the various gallery exhibitions, and to chat with gallery owners and notable local artists.

The Best Groceries & Specialty Shops

Shopping in Cabo San Lucas

A few decades ago the grocery offerings in Los Cabos were so limited that residents often drove to La Paz once a week to stock up. That’s not an issue anymore. If anything, there are almost too many options. In addition to Walmart, Costco and City Club–all of which have well-stocked grocery departments–there are local outlets of large Mexican supermarket chains like Soriana, LaComer (large stores in each of the cape cities, plus a specialty Fresko supermarket–Fresko Palmilla–with a focus on fresh produce and baked goods) and Chedraui (including an impressive new upgraded Chedraui Selecto store in San José del Cabo, with another coming soon in Cabo San Lucas), as well as weekly organic markets in both of the cape cities.

Not just grocery and sundries, but specialty shops of all kinds can now be found, from wine shops and cigar stores with walk-in humidors to custom clothing and beachwear boutiques for women like Pepita’s Magic of the Moon.

Fact is, you don’t have to walk very far in today’s Los Cabos to find something worth buying. Or even walk at all, since Walmart and many other local stores now offer delivery service.

See? We told you the Los Cabos shopping scene had grown a little more sophisticated.

Getting a Mexican Credit Card in Los Cabos

The Pros & Cons of Getting a Mexican Credit Card in Los Cabos

Getting a Mexican Credit Card in Los Cabos

Americans and Canadians who buy property and live at least seasonally in Los Cabos will find all the beaches, sunshine, margaritas and ocean views they’ve ever dreamed of, but along with this natural bounty and muy atractivo lifestyle comes a few cultural changes.

Language is the most obvious one, although so many people speak English in cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo that’s it rarely an issue, even for those whose Spanish vocabulary is limited to “Buenos días” and “Como está usted?”

More commonly, miscommunications involve financial transactions; from exchange and interest rates to bank statements and credit card disputes. Nobody, after all, wants there to be any confusion or incomprehensible fine print when it comes to their bank account or credit cards.

Which leads to the very good questions:  Do you even need a Mexican bank account or credit card in Los Cabos? What are the pros and cons?

The Pros

There are very good reasons to open a bank account in Los Cabos if you intend to spend an appreciable amount of time in the area, starting with the fact that you can trade dollars for pesos–and vice versa–without a questionable exchange rate or service charges. U.S. dollars are accepted everywhere in Los Cabos, but many area businesses set their own exchange rates, meaning it’s preferable to pay in pesos to avoid being overcharged.

U.S. credit cards are accepted virtually everywhere, too, so why add to your U.S. collection with a Mexican credit card? The truth is that those who intend to maintain a presence in their country of birth–property, bank accounts and the like–likely do not need a Mexican credit card (In Spanish, tarjeta de crédito).

However, if you intend to move seasonally or full-time to Los Cabos, then it will be handy to have a Mexican debit card that you can use to access money from ATMs (in Spanish, cajeros automáticos), pay bills and utilities, make retail and online purchases, and so on. You may also want a credit card–particularly if your U.S. issued card charges foreign transaction fees–but as we’ll discuss in the “Cons” section below, there are definitely some issues to consider. The safest and best bet is thus to go debit card only.

Just keep in mind that you will need a residente card and proof of residence to open a bank account, and that bank to issue you a debit/credit card. If you deposit several thousand dollars or the equivalent in pesos into your new account, banks will usually be happy to issue you a credit as well as debit card. These cards are issued in conjunction with Visa or MasterCard, but in case of loss, theft or fraud, you will need to make the report to your Mexican bank rather than the multinational credit card company.

The Cons

Speaking of theft and fraud…those two issues do occur in México–as they do in every country–and are particularly prevalent in popular tourist destinations like Los Cabos.

Restaurants and gas stations tend to be the places where credit card information is stolen with a higher frequency, so make it a point to pay cash in those instances and it will significantly reduce your risk profile.

If you are a victim of fraud, remember that most Mexican banks maintain 24-hour hotlines to report loss or fraud. Keep the hotline number handy, and if you don’t speak Spanish, at the very least you should be able to ask the operator to transfer you to someone who speaks English. You can do that by saying, “¿Puede transferirme a una persona que habla inglés, por favor?”

Fraud isn’t limited, however, to credit card thieves. Many U.S. and Canadian transplants have reported issues with bank fraud in Los Cabos, from unilaterally hiked interest rates on credit cards to limited liability in covering losses from stolen card charges.

Exorbitant interest rates and annual charges are also things likely to cause consternation to first-time holders of Mexican credit cards. Make sure you understand the terms before you accept a credit card from your bank, and check charges on a monthly basis. You do not want to be paying interest rates that may be in excess of 30%.

It sounds bad and sometimes is, but keep in mind there are ways to mitigate or limit issues with Mexican banking. The first is to eschew credit cards in favor of debit cards, since the former may require paying back fraudulent charges until the claim is resolved. Lost or stolen debit cards are harder for thieves to use, since they likely won’t have access to the PIN number, although it should be noted that debit cards can often be used for point-of-sale purchases.

Even more important is finding a bank where you feel comfortable with the communication skills and customer service quality. The local branch of Canadian owned Scotiabank, for example, is popular with many U.S. and Canadian transplants for these very reasons.

Banking services may not rival beaches, sunshine, margaritas and ocean views as reasons to move to Los Cabos, but be vigilant and aware of potential fraud and it won’t be a reason not to move.

Medical Care in Los Cabos

Health Wave – The Growth of High-Quality Medical Care in Los Cabos

Medical Care in Los Cabos

(Image provided by Pedregal.com)

México has long been a top destination for medical tourism, thanks to both a proximity to the U.S. and high-quality health care available at 40 to 65% less on average than its northern neighbor. The country also boasts world-class travel destinations like Los Cabos, which allow visitors to enjoy a memorable vacation around the scheduled dates for their chosen treatments or surgeries.

Los Cabos isn’t just a tropical travel destination, however, but increasingly a primary or seasonal home for U.S. and Canadian citizens, with population numbers for expatriates estimated at 15,000 and rising (out of a total municipal population of approximately 300,000). Commensurate with this burgeoning population growth–from the U.S., Canada and elsewhere–is an exponential growth of high-quality health care and state-of-the-art medical centers.

The newest of these modern, technologically sophisticated medical centers is Hospiten, which premiered in October 2018 just outside Cabo San Lucas, near one of the municipality’s most oft-visited shopping centers (Plaza San Lucas, home to Walmart). If the name is recognizable, that’s because Hospiten is affiliated with the international hospital group of the same name, which has a network of locations that includes México, Spain, Jamaica, Panama and the Dominican Rebublic.

Hospital H+ Los Cabos

(Image provided by Hospital H)

Hospiten Los Cabos offers patients a full-range of services, from emergency care and surgical suites to medical laboratories and departments specializing in anesthesiology, cardiology, general surgery, oral surgery, orthopedic surgery, plastic surgery, dermatology, internal medicine, neurosurgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics and psychology, among others.

Hospiten isn’t the only state-of-the-art medical facility locally. There’s also Hospital H+, which opened in 2016 in the tourist corridor that connects the cape cities, near San José del Cabo. Like Hospiten, H+ offers cutting-edge equipment and an excellent roster of on-call physicians, as well as 24-hour triage and intensive care, surgical areas and specialty clinics, laboratories and blood banks, radiology and ultrasound imaging, and private rooms for extended patient stays.

Hospiten and H+ may lead the local pack, but they’re hardly the only sources for high-quality care in the area. The U.S. Consulate regularly updates a list of fully-accredited hospitals and medical care facilities in Los Cabos, a list that at present includes the two already touted, as well as the AMC and BlueNet Hospitals, the General Hospitals in both Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, the Red Cross (Cruz Roja in Spanish) ambulance and rescue services, plus a few clinics and sanitariums.

Medical Care in Los Cabos

This U.S. Consulate list is a helpful guide, and points to the region’s abundance of quality health care. But the list is far from comprehensive, and it doesn’t even begin to address the plethora of great dental and cosmetic surgery clinics, which have traditionally been among the most popular medical services for tourists and short-term visitors to the area.

Simply put: Los Cabos has medical care that’s equivalent in quality to that found in the U.S., but of course at only a fraction of the cost. This affordability factor is at the heart of México’s medical tourism sector, which accounts for some five billion dollars annually, but it’s also an attractive lifestyle convenience for U.S. and Canadian residents of the cape cities. Add it to year-round sunshine, beachfront real estate, championship level golf courses and pampering spas, and you’ll understand why both the population and health care industries of Los Cabos are growing so fast.

Valentine’s Day Dinners in Los Cabos

A Perfect Romance – Valentine’s Day Dinners in Los Cabos

Few places on the planet are more synonymous with romance than Los Cabos. Perhaps Paris, but let’s be honest:  How many palm trees are there in Paris?

Cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo have all the sun-kissed romantic attributes anyone could ask for, from swaying palm trees and horizon-stretching ocean vistas to golden sand beaches perfect for hand-holding perambulations or side-by-side horseback rides…plus all the luxurious over-the-top amenities you would expect from a major metropolitan area.

When it comes to the most romantic day of them all, however, what Los Cabos does best are dinners. Tables for two, either in the sand or on a nearby terrazzo, with candlelight, mood music, multi-course pairing menus, and of course some of the most spectacular views you’ve ever seen in your life.

With that in mind, here are the three most romantic Valentine’s Day dinners in Los Cabos for 2019.

Sunset MonaLisa

Valentine´s Day in Cabo San Lucas

There’s a very good reason this place employs an onsite wedding coordinator, and hosts over 100 destination nuptials per year. The views are so breathtaking as to defy description, but what else would you expect from a place located at Sunset Point?

Just how magical is it? Imagine looking out across a cerulean blue swath of Sea of Cortes towards a half-mile Land’s End promontory comprised of ancient granite monuments and sculpted beaches as the sun explodes in a fiery red ball and descends beyond the distant horizon. Trust us:  Someone just proposed reading this.

The food is nearly equal to the majestic views, particularly on Valentine’s Day, when the fine dining restaurant offers sunset seatings for a six-course prix-fixe menu, with accompanying ballads from romantic tenors and an acclaimed violinist. If you’re not in the mood for a large meal, pair oysters and Champagne on the adjoining Taittinger Terrace.

One&Only Palmilla

Valentine´s Day in Cabo San Lucas

A benchmark resort in Los Cabos for over 50 years, Palmilla employs no less than five dozen gardeners to keep its paradise-like grounds manicured to perfection. Consider that a sign that everything here is of the highest possible quality.

Celebrated French Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten hosts the resort’s most elegant Valentine’s Day feast, a four-course epicurean delight that pairs the upscale steakhouse fare of SEARED with Grand Cru Classé wines and vintage Champagne.

Like the wines, the muy romántico moonlit views of the Sea of Cortés are also in a class by themselves.

El Farallón

Valentine´s Day in Cabo San Lucas

As you may have noticed by now, stunning views are as much a part of the romantic dining experience in Los Cabos as culinary mastery and sommelier-aided wine pairings. El Farallón, the signature restaurant at the five-star Resort at Pedregal, takes a backseat to no one in this regard.

Set on the edge of a cliff above crashing Pacific Ocean waves, with magnificent views of Land’s End, this place drips romance. It doesn’t hurt a bit, of course, that Executive Chef Gustavo Pinet and his staff serve up the finest market style seafood in Cabo San Lucas, and that like Sunset MonaLisa, El Farallón features its own dedicated Champagne Lounge.

Reservations are a must for El Farallón, as they are for SEARED and Sunset MonaLisa.

What? You thought you were the first one to think of spending Valentine’s Day in paradise?

Imagine a place where you can look out your windows or over the edge of your infinity pool and see vast panoramas of ocean blue, a place where it’s not uncommon to spy leaping dolphins and breaching humpback whales, where golf courses parallel sheer cliffs, restaurants offer barefoot fine dining in the sand, and the sun shines almost every day. It’s a vision so surreal and dreamlike as to be magical, but such views are nonetheless shared by many Cabo San Lucas homes for sale.

Would you be interested in a home like this?

Of course you would, because the scene just described is nothing less than a sun-kissed tropical paradise.

But you’d still want to know more, including details about price and availability. Let’s start with the latter…

There Are More Cabo San Lucas Homes for Sale Than Ever Before

Cabo San Lucas, the southernmost point of the nearly 800-mile-long Baja California peninsula, has long been famed for its beaches, its big-game sportfishing, its boisterous nightlife, and its half-mile promontory–dubbed Land’s End–that features stunning naturally formed landmarks like Lover’s Beach and El Arco (an 80-million-year-old granite monument eroded by time into the shape of a magnificent arch).

This remarkable community is, along with cape sister city San José del Cabo, part of the larger Los Cabos (In English, The Capes) municipality, which over the past few years has experienced the largest building and development boom in its history. This boom has produced a host of five-star resorts from benchmark luxury brands like Ritz-Carlton and Four Seasons, plus an ever-growing number of spectacular upscale residential communities, whose sprawling seaside estates boast amenities that range from gated security and boutique markets to sumptuously appointed beach clubs and championship level golf courses designed by legendary players.

It’s an exciting time to be in Los Cabos, and in Cabo San Lucas specifically, because what this far-from-over building boom really means is that there have never been more scenically situated and elegantly furnished ocean-view Cabo San Lucas homes for sale than there are right now. Even better…

The Price is Right, Particularly When Compared to the U.S. and Canadian Housing Markets

The most mind-numbing thing about some of the luxurious coastal “Cabo San Lucas homes for sale” is that their list prices are so much lower than properties of comparable size and splendor in the U.S. and Canada.

How is such a thing possible? For many of the same reasons that the cost of living is so much lower in México than it is relative to its North American neighbors, and that property taxes in Los Cabos are significantly lower than those of all 5o U.S. states, as well as popular Canadian cities like Vancouver and Toronto.

Economy, exchange rates, and a host of other factors…all of which contribute to, and make possible, some truly once-in-a-lifetime investment opportunities.

It’s Easy to Find Homes for Sale in Cabo San Lucas That Suit Your Lifestyle

Investment opportunities? How about lifestyle opportunities. One of the most underrated aspects of Cabo San Lucas is its variety, not only in terms of breathtaking vantages and eye-catching land and seascapes–from beach, desert and mountains to both the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortez–but also in terms of lifestyle and amenities.

Do you love fishing? Well, Cabo San Lucas just happens to be one of the meccas of the sportfishing universe. Not only is it the site of the world’s richest fishing tournament–Bisbee’s Black & Blue–but it’s been renowned for over half-a-century for its year-round abundance of marlin, tuna, and many other species. More to the point, developments like Puerto Los Cabos boast their own onsite marinas, with slips available to home owners.

How about golf? Los Cabos is home to over a dozen championship level layouts, including three currently ranked among the 100 best in the world. New Pacific Coast residential communities in Cabo San Lucas like Diamante, Quivira and Rancho San Lucas each have their own signature courses for home owners to enjoy, with designs by household names like Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Greg Norman, respectively.

Love kayaking? Surfing? Paddle boarding? Snorkeling and diving? Los Cabos has world-class conditions for all of the above, with newly minted residential communities nearby.

Shopping and dining? Luxury Avenue isn’t the only shopping center in Cabo San Lucas to feature luxury goods from brand names like Cartier and Fendi. And Enrique Olvera, Jean-Georges Vongerichten and Nobu Matsuhisa aren’t only famous chefs who’ve chosen to bring their talents and vision to the thriving Los Cabos culinary scene.

Add it all up and majestic ocean views are only one of many reasons to consider the incredible collection of Cabo San Lucas homes for sale in 2019.Windermere Los Cabos Real Estate

Bringing Cats and Dogs to Los Cabos

Everything You Need to Know About Bringing Cats and Dogs to Los Cabos

Your pet is going to love Los Cabos for many of the same reasons you do: year-round sunshine and tropical breezes; gorgeous beach, desert and mountain terrains; and plenty of water–from infinity pools to the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortés–to splash around in.

But first you have to get them here.

Whether you’re bringing pets along to Los Cabos on a family vacation, or as part of a seasonal or permanent move, the requirements for their entry into México are much the same.

Luckily, these pre-conditions aren’t terribly difficult to fulfill. But they are very specific, so it’s important to be correct in all details.

The Right Paperwork

Both cats and dogs are covered by the standard International Health Certificate, APHIS Form 7001. APHIS stands for Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, and is an agency under the jurisdiction of the USDA, or United States Department of Agriculture. This form, an example of which you’ll find included here, must be filled out without abbreviations using a computer or word processor (handwritten forms will be rejected), and signed in ink by a USDA accredited veterinarian and an endorsing APHIS Veterinary Medical Officer, who will apply the necessary APHIS embossed seal. APHIS maintains endorsement offices in most U.S. states, but if this option is not convenient, México also accepts certificates from USDA accredited vets on their own letterhead (see example). Whichever health certificate option you choose, it must be signed and dated within 1o days of your arrival in México.

The Right Shots

You’ll need your vet to provide proof of vaccines against rabies and distemper, administered at least 15 days before arrival in México. You should also have a detailed description of the pets, and a statement that the pets in question are healthy and fit to travel, and have been dewormed internally and externally within the last six months. All of this information may be included by your vet on the health certificate, but if not, ask him or her for additional documentation. Make photocopies of everything, just to be on the safe side.

Travel Tips

Your dog would almost certainly prefer to come by car, ensuring at least 1,ooo miles of hanging his or her head out the window. But regardless of how you bring your pets into México (air, land or sea), each individual is allowed up to two cats or dogs (four per couple).

Airlines vary in their requirements for purpose-built crates and kennels, but no cardboard or make-shift containers are acceptable. If you are flying with pets, you should make sure to confirm the correct requirements beforehand, and double check that the crate or kennel is labeled properly. If you have a large dog (over 100 lbs.), he or she may have to fly separately in a cargo plane. There may be extra costs or baggage fees associated with transporting pets, so ask about this when confirming details with your airline of choice.

Once you arrive at your point of entry into México, look for a kiosk with the acronym SAGARPA/SENSAICA. This is where you present your health certificate and other documentation, and have your pets inspected. They should be in a crate, kennel or other clean pet transporter for inspection, with no bed or chew toys inside. Dry food and water are allowed in the transporter.

And that’s it…that’s all that stands between you and your pets and a new life in a sun-kissed tropical paradise.

See, we told you it wasn’t that difficult…  If this article was helpful, please consider sharing, thanks!

Property Taxes in Los Cabos

Property Taxes in Los Cabos Are Lower Than You Think (And Easier to Pay!)

It’s no secret that Los Cabos is home to some of the most spectacular real estate on earth, from sprawling hacienda style properties overlooking the ocean to gorgeous beachfront condos and breathtaking hilltop luxury villas.

Discerning travelers and those interested in the secondary home market also know that cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo are destinations on the rise, thanks to a thriving culinary scene driven by celebrated chefs, and upscale amenities like pampering spas and championship-level golf courses.

But what’s not so well-known are the Los Cabos area’s property tax rates, and how well they stack up against those in the U.S.

Differences in Property Tax Rates Between the U.S. and México

Not only are magnificent ocean view homes more readily available, and at much lower average list prices than those of its North American neighbors, but Los Cabos also offers superb value in terms of annual property taxes.

Los Cabos property taxes, known in Spanish as the predial, are assessed annually at only 0.1% of the value of the property at the time of its purchase. That’s well below the rate for all 50 U.S. states. Hawaii, for example, is the U.S. state with the lowest annual property tax rate at 0.27%. Colorado, California and Texas occupy the proverbial middle ground at 0.57%, 0.79% and 1.86%, respectively; while Illinois and New Jersey, at 2.32% and 2.40%, have the highest annual U.S. property tax rates.

Los Cabos is also a value when compared to Canada, easily besting the property tax rates of cities like Vancouver (0.25%) and Toronto (0.64%).

Annual Taxes based on the above for a $500,000 usd home:

  • Colorado @ 0.57% = $2,850 usd
  • California @ 0.79% = $3,950 usd
  • Texas @ 1.86% = $9,300 usd
  • Hawaii @ 0.27% = $1,350 usd
  • Illinois @ 2.32% = $11,600 usd
  • New Jersey @ 2.40% = $12,000 usd
  • Vancouver @0.25% = $1,250 usd
  • Toronto @ 0.64% = $3,200 usd
  • Los Cabos @ 0.1% = $500 usd

How to Accrue Additional Savings on Your Los Cabos Property Taxes

In addition to the built-in savings on property taxes vs. U.S. rates, home owners in Los Cabos are also eligible for additional savings simply by paying their taxes in a timely fashion.

The annual deadline for property taxes in Los Cabos is March 31, however, the Los Cabos Municipal Council offers discounted rates to those who pay early. Discounts are awarded on a sliding scale: 20% off the predial for payment in January; 15% in February; and 10% in March.

For those considering Los Cabos as a retirement destination, senior citizens over 60 years of age who are also permanent residents qualify for property tax discounts of up to 50% off the standard predial. These savings are available through México’s INAPAM program, which issues a card to enrolled seniors entitling them to discounts on a wide variety of goods and services.

How to Pay Your Los Cabos Property Taxes

No need to stress the payment process, either. It’s completely modernized and conveniently easy. Home owners are able to pay the predial online at http://www.eloscabos.gob.mx/. The only prerequisites are your clave catastral (a 17-digit tax ID number) and a valid credit card.

The Big Picture

Los Cabos continues to take steps to reward home owners who pay their property taxes on time and in full, as well as to streamline the process for maximum ease and convenience. Consider these attractions in tandem with the stunningly beautiful locale, and lifestyle factors like abundant upscale amenities and a lower cost of living, and it’s no wonder that the Los Cabos real estate market has never been hotter than it is right now.
